From Fledging Feelings to Full Flight: An Introverted, Overthinking Perfectionist Implements a DEI Philosophy Shift

In this first-person Engage feature, Sharleen Tarnate-Nguyen, the Volunteer Engagement Manager for the San Diego Humane Society, gives readers an impassioned account of her journey to implement an organization-wide philosophy shift toward diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices. Describing the experience as one of “fledging feelings to full flight,” Tarnate-Nguyent now pledges to always advocate for and highlight diverse volunteer voices in her career as a Volunteer Engagement professional. Writes Tarnate-Nguyent, “With the discourse around DEI becoming increasingly politicized and heated, I argue that at its root, it’s about basic human rights and dignity. . . it’s having the courage to act on what is right. . . it is speaking out against injustice and discrimination, even when it’s scary. . . and it is forging pathways to allow equitable access to resources, influence and power within our nonprofits.”

This is fantastic, Sharleen! I especially like the practical how-tos. Many people would like to make change, but don't know how to get started. You've given us that. Thank you!

Ben and Becca!  I am really proud of you, Sharleen.  You try new things, speak up and then are kind enough to show others what your way has been so they can carve their own.  GREAT article!

Thank you, everyone, for your very kind words. I'm happy to hear this article is resonating with people, and I hope it inspires others to take a leap into DEI work if they're nervous or hesitant.

It does make a difference! Just this past week, we received an email from a volunteer, which included the following message: "It has been my honor to volunteer for SDHS, a 'DEI' organization I respect. An organization with an honorable mission statement –'Create a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people'.  A mission statement our country truly needs during these chaotic times."

I love knowing that our volunteers make that easy connection between DEI and our mission of inspiring compassion! Happy to continue this conversation with anyone interested in learning more: starnate-nguyen@sdhumane.org.
