Cheryll Martin is employed as the General Manager of Volunteering Auckland, a position she has held with varying titles for more than 18 years.
Martin is a member of the Auckland Social Policy Forum, a group formed by the Mayor of Auckland and the Minister for Social Development to look at solutions to social issues within the greater Auckland area. She serves as the Vice Chair and an Executive Trustee with the Birkdale Beachaven Community Project, operating two community houses. She is a trustee for Takapuna North Community Trust and a trustee for the Manawatu Volunteer Resource Centre.
Martin has also served on the Executive of Social Development Partners, a national organisation supporting the sector in capacity building. She was a member of the Ministerial Reference Group for the International Year of Volunteers, 2001, and she was a community representative on the Ministry of Social Policy Volunteers & Volunteering Policy Project.
Martin has a particular interest in understanding where volunteering fits within our communities from all aspects – arts, sport, conservation, health, social services – and the impact it can have on both the individual, the community/voluntary sector, and the communities in which we live, work, and play. She is a strong believer in making volunteering accessible and sees volunteering as an active form of citizen engagement.
Martin is also involved in a reference group looking at supporting various sporting clubs in volunteer engagement. She has completed work on a Club Operations Manual for Sport NZ and she has delivered workshops in volunteer management practices over the last 15 years.
