Carol Kleinmaier, M.A., is the Director of the Shanti National Training Institute (SNTI) in San Francisco, California. Her educational background is in adult education, English literature and philosophy. Beginning her career at Shanti Project as a volunteer in 1984, she joined the staff in 1986 and had primary responsibility until 1994 for presenting and refining Shanti's volunteer training. In her position with the Shanti National Training Institute, Carol is responsible for combining aspects of the internationally recognized Shanti model of peer support and the Shanti volunteer training into a comprehensive, values-based model of volunteer management.
Carol has developed and presented training for volunteers, volunteer managers, professional health care providers and community groups in locations across the country on issues such as caregiving for the chronically and terminally ill, program development, diversity and multiculturalism, organizational development, volunteer management and training design. In 1999, she developed the curriculum for "In the Spirit of Service," a two-day workshop for volunteer managers, and with the staff of SNTI she has been presenting this workshop to groups across the country.
Carol also has served as the Executive Director of San Francisco's KAIROS Support for Caregivers, the first nonprofit organization in the country dedicated to supporting the caregivers of persons with HIV/AIDS. In 1998, she was honored by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for her work in the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
With Dr. Charles Garfield, she is author of Training Volunteers for Community Service: The Step-by-Step Guide of the Shanti National Training Institute, published by Jossey-Bass.
