Eric Gorman is a first-year graduate student at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs in Austin, Texas. This article began as a paper submitted for the new course "Community Engagement and the Management of Volunteers in Nonprofit and Public Organizations." Before enrolling in graduate school, Gorman worked as an editorial writer for Florida newspapers in Daytona Beach and Vero Beach. He graduated from Indiana University in 1995 with degrees in journalism and sociology.
