Kathryn Berry Carter joined St. Jude in 2000 and is the director of Volunteer Services for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her department coordinates the resources of more than 600 volunteers, three support clubs, special events within housing, and two Guest Services Information desks. Berry Carter’s team is creative and resourceful and seeks to improve the quality of life for patients and families through Volunteer Services. Noteworthy programs led by her team include implementation and daily operation of the Helping Hands respite care program for caregivers and the PAIR mentor program, which matches experienced parents with newly diagnosed and bereaved parents.
Under Berry Carter’s leadership, the Volunteer Services department has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Volunteer Program of the Year at the Spirit of Giving Awards, hosted by Volunteer Mid-South.
Berry Carter has presented on several topics at the local, state, and national level and has co-authored an article in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nurses titled “Development of a Respite Care Program for Caregivers of Pediatric Oncology Patients and Their Siblings.” (http://jpo.sagepub.com/content/early/2013/01/28/1043454212473652)
With more than 20 years of experience in volunteer management, Berry Carter holds two certifications, the CAVS and CVA. She is president of the Tennessee Healthcare Volunteer Professionals (THVP), a former Region 1 Representative for THVP, and past president of Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA) Memphis.
