Leslie is currently serving her second term of service as an AmeriCorps member of SecureCorps with the United Way of York County in York, Pennsylvania. SecureCorps started with a disaster preparedness/homeland security focus and has branched out to include a Free Tax Preparation program and the Youth Volunteer Initiative, which Brengle coordinates.
The mission of the Youth Volunteer Initiative is to help connect students in York County with non-profit agencies based on their interests, skills, talents and availability. The major tool used by the Youth Volunteer Initiative to advertise opportunities is the national, searchable database − 1-800-volunteer.org − where students can explore over 140 youth-appropriate volunteer opportunities in York County.
Additionally, the Youth Volunteer Initiative coordinates two county-wide days of service annually: National Family Volunteer Day in November and National & Global Youth Service Day in April. This semester, Brengle engaged the help of 40 high school students in the planning process for the April project. This is the first time such a large number of youth have been able to work directly with the Youth Volunteer Initiative and the United Way of York County.
When not coordinating the Youth Volunteer Initiative, Brengle Leslie enjoys working at Penn-Mar Organization, Inc. as a Residential Assistant and member of a direct care team for four male residents (ages 26-60) with developmental disabilities. In her free time, the 22-year-old recent graduate of York College of Pennsylvania (with a dual B.A. in Psychology and Sociology) volunteers for York County's chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
